Gay call-in show on WHK; Gay Waves moved to 11:30 am
by John Duane
First off this month, some possible bad news for Gay Waves' listeners. GayWaves' broadcast time has been moved by the WRUW station management from our present 7-7:30 pm Wednesday time slot to Friday mornings from 11:30 am-12 noon. The station management thought the move would allow us more time to put our production together before air time. Although the Friday broadcast does give us more time for production, we feel that the 11:30 am broadcast time may be problematic and somewhat insensitive to the needs of a number of our listeners. Not every member of our community is totally out of the closet and able to listen at the new time, especially in the workplace.
in writing, call the station at 368-2208 and leave a message with your opinion for Davis.
GayWaves is also losing the services of two of our dedicated staffers, Josette and Jerry, who have become overwhelmed with new jobs and booming business. We do however, have an eager student volunteer, Kelli Quinn, who has professional broadcasting experience and will work with us this semester. Kelli will be working on bringing news of importance to our community. Welcome aboard, Kelli!
GayWaves is now searching for other volunteers from the community to staff the show on a long-term basis. Especially needed are volunteers to learn the technical aspects of putting our show on the air. Training will be provided. Volunteer staffers are needed in other areas also. If you are interested, call WRUW at 368-2208 and leave a message for GayWaves staff to contact you.
My only means of contact with the community many years ago was through GayWaves 'forerunner, Radio Free Lambda, and later Charlie Callender's original Chronicle. Indeed, it wasn't until recently that I felt comfortable listening to This Way Buck Harris on WHK Out on WCSB 89.3 FM when I worked late at the office. If you find the new broadcast time to be a problem and want to let WRUW management know, write to WRUW public affairs director Brian Davis c/o WRUW 91.1 FM, 11220 Bellflower Road, Cleveland, OH 44106, or fax them your thoughts at 368-5414. If you are really closeted and feel uncomfortable putting your thoughts
Now for some really good news! WHK 1420 AM will be adding some gay balance to the anti-gay stance taken by some of its talk show hosts. Beginning March 26 Buck Harris will host Gay Nineties, the first live lesbian, gay and bisexual talk show on a commercial radio station in the Midwest. Gay Nineties will be heard on WHK 1420
AM every Friday between 9 and 11 pm.
The first hour of the show will feature interviews and related calls from listeners followed by open topic call-ins during the second hour. Cleveland lesbian Karen Harrison will report news of importance to our community during the show. The Chronicle will be providing calendar information for the new show.
The national gay variety show In the Life went on the air Sunday, January 17 on WVIZ Channel 25. The March edition of In the Life will air Sunday, March 14 at 11:30 pm hosted by Charles Busch, author and star of the internationally acclaimed offBroadway play, Vampire Lesbians of Sodom. The March show will examine the lesbian and gay film festival circuit around the country and will highlight some of the best films screened this year. One of the films to be previewed will be One Nation Under God, a documentary about religious groups that try to "cure" homosexuality.
The March edition of In the Life will air during WVIZ's March fund-raising membership drive. WVIZ is asking for volunteers from our community to answer phones in the studio on Sunday, March 14 from 10:45 pm to 12:15 am while In the Life is being broadcast. WVIZ is located at 4300 Brookpark Road, just west of State Road, south of I-480. They need about 25 volunteers. WVIZ airs In the Life once a month and it is up to us to let the station know we

want this gay programming to continue. If you would like to thank WVIZ for carrying In the Life, especially if you are strapped for cash and can't afford a membership, contact WVIZ's Joan McSweeny at 398-2800 to volunteer your services.
Since the country discovered that President Clinton intends to stand by his campaign promise to end the discrimination against lesbians, gays and bisexuals in the military, our community has come under intense media focus. I find that I am going through videotape at an enormous rate to try and keep up with the television stories and reports about our people. Pay particular attention to the cable news networks (CNN, CNN Headline News and C-SPAN), Black Entertainment Network (BET), as well as the network news and talk shows. The increase in gay reporting in the Plain Dealer since January has been nothing less than astounding. Check out USA Today and Newsweek for more in-depth coverage of our issues.
Finally, the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force has produced a guide to promoting media advocacy. The guide, entitled Media Advocacy Tips, is available in limited quantity at the Lesbian-Gay Community Service Center. More information and additional copies of the guide are available by calling Robert Bray of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force at 202-332-6483.
